Lamine Yamal has made it clear that Spain will head into their FIFA World Cup semi-final against France with confidence rather than fear as the teenage sensation looks to celebrate his 19th birthday with a place in the final.
The Barcelona star sparked plenty of debate after Spain’s dramatic 2-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium when comments emerged suggesting France should be the side worried about facing the reigning European champions.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Yamal clarified what he meant.
“I was asked if I was afraid of France, and I said no. We are European champions. It’s simply football,” the youngster explained.
Despite the magnitude of Tuesday’s clash, Yamal appeared calm and composed, insisting he feels no added pressure ahead of one of the biggest matches of his career.
“There are far more difficult situations in life than a football match, so I’m calm,” he said. “I’ll go out there, play like I always do and give everything for the team.”
Birthday Wish: A Ticket to the World Cup Final
Yamal recently celebrated his 19th birthday and revealed he treated himself to a diamond-studded necklace to mark the occasion. However, he admitted the only gift that truly matters is helping Spain reach Sunday’s World Cup final in New York.
“I haven’t received many gifts yet,” he joked. “The best present would be winning on Tuesday and qualifying for the final.”
Spain’s squad also marked the occasion by giving their young star a guard of honour during training, highlighting the close bond within Luis de la Fuente’s squad.
Ready for the Biggest Stage
Although Yamal has scored only once during the tournament, he is not concerned about his personal statistics. His focus remains firmly on helping Spain continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
“I don’t focus on goals, but it’s always special to score in a game like this,” he said. “I accept the challenge. That’s why I came here.”
The winger believes fans are in for one of the tournament’s standout matches.
“It’s the game everyone has been waiting for,” Yamal added. “I think it will be a beautiful match for everyone watching.”
De la Fuente Targets Another Victory Over France
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente expects a fierce contest but insists his side will remain true to their attacking identity against Didier Deschamps’ France.
Spain have defeated France in each of their last two meetings, including last year’s thrilling 5-4 UEFA Nations League semi-final victory, but De la Fuente believes this French side has grown significantly since then.
“We’ve analysed France in great detail,” the Spain coach said. “They have fantastic players, but so do we. We need to show our strengths while limiting theirs.”
The Spanish boss plans to dominate possession and force France onto the defensive rather than adapting to their opponents.
“We’ll try to be on the front foot, impose our style and win the important individual battles,” he said.
France Present a Bigger Challenge
While Spain arrive full of confidence, De la Fuente admitted France are an even stronger team than the one Spain edged in Stuttgart last year.
“I think they are a much better team now,” he said. “Those players have developed, gained experience and improved over the last two years. That’s the reality.”
France have reached the semi-finals thanks to the attacking brilliance of Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembélé, making them one of the tournament favourites.
Still, De la Fuente wants his players to embrace the occasion rather than be overwhelmed by it.
“We’re in a unique moment,” he said. “Who knows if we’ll have another opportunity like this? We have to enjoy it, believe in ourselves and be the team we know we can be.”
With a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake, all eyes will be on Arlington as two of world football’s biggest powers battle for a shot at lifting the game’s greatest prize.
