Kylian Mbappe has moved into a commanding position in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot after scoring twice in France’s thrilling 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off.

The French superstar now tops the scoring charts with 10 goals, opening a two-goal gap over Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who has eight goals ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain.

With one match left to play, Messi still has a chance to challenge for the tournament’s top scorer award. The Argentine icon will need at least two goals in the final to draw level with Mbappe, although the Golden Boot could ultimately be decided by assists if both players finish on the same number of goals. At present, both stars have registered four assists.

Mbappe Sets Another World Cup Record

Mbappe’s latest brace did more than strengthen his Golden Boot bid—it also cemented his place in World Cup history.

The 27-year-old has now scored 22 World Cup goals, making him the competition’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing every player who has come before him. His remarkable consistency on football’s biggest stage continues to rewrite the record books.

While France fell short of a podium finish after an entertaining encounter with England, Mbappe’s individual brilliance once again stole the spotlight.

    Messi’s Final Opportunity

All eyes now turn to Sunday’s blockbuster World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.

Messi has already enjoyed another unforgettable tournament, recovering from the disappointment of missing a penalty against Egypt by producing one of the competition’s most memorable performances. He scored a stunning hat-trick in the final 13 minutes to inspire Argentina’s dramatic comeback victory and book a place in the quarter-finals.

Although he failed to add to his tally against Switzerland, the Argentine captain has another opportunity to deliver on the biggest stage. A strong performance against Spain could not only help Argentina defend their world title but also see him challenge Mbappe for the Golden Boot.

Other Golden Boot Contenders Fall Short

Behind the leading pair, several stars enjoyed outstanding tournaments but have now finished their campaigns.

Norway striker Erling Haaland and England midfielder Jude Bellingham each ended with seven goals, while England captain Harry Kane finished on six.

Throughout the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the race for the Golden Boot has been one of the World Cup’s most captivating storylines, with football’s biggest names delivering goals at an incredible rate.

    Chasing World Cup History

Mbappe and Messi have already surpassed Germany legend Miroslav Klose on the all-time World Cup scoring list, further underlining their legendary status.

Meanwhile, Haaland became Norway’s highest-ever World Cup goalscorer after only two matches, and Kane overtook Gary Lineker as England’s leading scorer in World Cup history.

The tournament has also reignited interest in one of football’s oldest records—Just Fontaine’s 13 goals in a single World Cup, set in 1958.

Only three players have ever reached double figures in a single World Cup tournament:

    • Just Fontaine (France) – 13 goals in 1958
    • Sándor Kocsis (Hungary) – 11 goals in 1954
    • Gerd Müller (West Germany) – 10 goals in 1970

Mbappe’s tally of 10 means he still has an outside chance of matching one of the game’s most iconic records, although he would need an extraordinary performance if he had another match to play.

Records That Defined the 2026 World Cup

This tournament has already produced several historic milestones beyond the Golden Boot race:

    • Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo became the first players to feature in six FIFA World Cups.
    • Cristiano Ronaldo became the first footballer to score in six different World Cups.
    • Ronaldo also became the oldest player to score multiple goals in a single World Cup match.
    • Curaçao made history as the smallest nation ever to appear at a FIFA World Cup.
    • Mexico’s opening match against South Africa produced the most red cards in an opening World Cup fixture, with three dismissals.
    • The 2026 edition has also become the highest-attended y highest-scoring FIFA World Cup in history.

As the tournament reaches its conclusion, the spotlight will be firmly on the final in New York New Jersey Stadium. While Argentina and Spain battle for the biggest prize in international football, another fascinating contest will unfold alongside it—whether Lionel Messi can produce one last masterpiece to deny Kylian Mbappe the Golden Boot.Capture
