Cristiano Ronaldo finally has the image Saudi Arabian football dreamed of when he first arrived in Riyadh: standing tall with the Saudi Pro League trophy in his hands, surrounded by yellow-shirted Al-Nassr fans celebrating a title years in the making.
When Al-Nassr signed Ronaldo in December 2022 after his dramatic exit from Manchester United, it was more than a football transfer. It was a statement to the world. Saudi Arabia wanted to transform its football league into a global attraction, and bringing in one of the greatest players in history was the clearest sign yet of those ambitions.
Yet despite Ronaldo’s goals, records, and worldwide attention, one thing had remained missing for more than three years — a major domestic title.
That finally changed on Thursday night.
The 41-year-old scored twice in Al-Nassr’s commanding 4-1 win over Damac on the final day of the season, securing the Saudi Pro League title ahead of fierce rivals Al-Hilal. It was Al-Nassr’s first league championship since 2019 and the trophy Ronaldo was ultimately brought to Saudi Arabia to win.
For Ronaldo, the achievement carries extra weight. Since arriving in Riyadh, he has scored 129 goals across all competitions for Al-Nassr and recently passed the 100-goal mark in the Saudi Pro League alone. But individual numbers were never going to be enough. The pressure to deliver silverware followed him from the moment he landed in Saudi Arabia.
His arrival also opened the floodgates for the league’s transformation. Soon after Ronaldo’s signing, stars like Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez, Sadio Mane, and Neymar followed, joining the country’s biggest clubs in what became one of football’s most aggressive recruitment drives.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which also owns Newcastle United, took control of four major clubs in 2023: Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ahli, and Al-Ittihad. Massive investment quickly turned the Saudi Pro League into one of the most talked-about competitions in world football.
This season has arguably been the league’s most competitive yet.
For much of the campaign, four clubs were in contention for the title. Al-Ahli stayed in the race thanks to the goals of Ivan Toney, while Al-Qadsiah emerged as surprise challengers under Brendan Rodgers. But as the season reached its climax, the battle narrowed to the two Riyadh giants: Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal.
Everything seemed destined to be decided in their huge showdown on May 12 — a match many described as the biggest league game in Saudi football history. According to organisers, it was watched in more than 180 countries.
The match delivered unforgettable drama.
Al-Nassr appeared seconds away from victory as the game entered the 97th minute, with fans already celebrating in the stands. Then disaster struck. Goalkeeper Bento spilled what should have been a routine catch, turning it into a heartbreaking own goal that handed Al-Hilal a dramatic equaliser.
The 1-1 draw kept the title race alive.
But unlike previous seasons, Al-Nassr did not collapse under the pressure. On the final day, Ronaldo ensured there would be no more setbacks.
The league triumph also adds another chapter to Ronaldo’s remarkable career. It is now his eighth domestic league title, following championships in England with Manchester United, Spain with Real Madrid, and Italy with Juventus.
For Saudi football officials, the moment represents validation after years of enormous spending and global scrutiny.
Sports business expert Simon Chadwick believes the title strengthens Saudi Arabia’s belief that rapid football success can be achieved through heavy investment and international star power. At the same time, he argues that Al-Nassr must continue winning — especially in Asia — if they want to establish themselves among the continent’s elite clubs.
The title also comes as relief after a painful disappointment just days earlier, when Al-Nassr surprisingly lost the AFC Champions League Two final to Japan’s Gamba Osaka.
Still, Ronaldo’s journey in Saudi Arabia has not been without controversy.
Earlier this year, he reportedly missed two league matches amid frustrations over how PIF manages Al-Nassr compared to rivals Al-Hilal. Critics from other clubs have also accused the league of favouring Ronaldo and his team.
Ronaldo himself addressed the growing tension, warning that constant complaints from players and clubs about referees and league decisions were damaging the competition’s image.
“I think this is not good for the league,” he said earlier this season. “This is football, not a war.”
Beyond football, questions have recently emerged about Saudi Arabia’s wider sports project. PIF announced plans to stop funding LIV Golf after the current season, while the 2029 Winter Asian Games scheduled for Saudi Arabia have been postponed indefinitely. Reports have also suggested that the WTA Finals could leave the country once the current agreement expires.
Even in football, the excitement surrounding superstar arrivals has cooled compared to the frenzy of 2023. Saudi clubs are now focusing more on younger players with long-term value rather than expensive veterans nearing the end of their careers.
There are still major deals — Al-Qadsiah signed Italian striker Mateo Retegui for around £57 million, while Al-Hilal brought in Darwin Nunez for approximately £46 million — but the strategy is evolving.
Mohamed Salah remains a dream target for Al-Ittihad after leaving Liverpool, though Saudi clubs are reportedly becoming more cautious about transfer fees and wages.
That is why Ronaldo’s title win feels symbolic in more ways than one.
To some, it proves Saudi Arabia’s massive investment worked. To others, it may represent the final great moment of an era when clubs spent hundreds of millions in pursuit of instant global relevance.
What comes next for Saudi football remains uncertain.
But for now, Al-Nassr fans finally have the celebration they waited years for — and Cristiano Ronaldo has added yet another trophy to a career that continues to defy time.
